• The “wills” on the bus went round and round. You know that song? The wheels on the bus go round and round, except that in Kansas (or wherever the regional accent extends), wheels are sometimes pronounced “wills.” I probably did not catch this until I learned how to spell wheel, at which time I also began to discover other words that people pronounce differently.
• The District of Columbia is a foreign country. I probably mixed this up with Colombia the country, but I took a long time in realizing the name is a throwback to Columbus (Columbus = Columbia).
• Catholic and Christian were the same word…when you know you’re not Catholic but think the word is “Christian”… Apparently I never heard those two words in the same sentence. Fortunately – through an embarrassing moment in kindergarten when I said I wasn’t Christian (I am) – this corrected itself quite quickly.
• Beginning with first grade (why not kindergarten or preschool?), there is a permanent record created that will follow you everywhere you go in life. Be honest, you thought something like that too, didn’t you?
